PEGGY ANN (POWLEN) RINEHART passed away peacefully at her home in Kokomo, Indiana, October 22, 2025. She was born January 29, 1933 to Byron and Mary (Crimmins) Powlen. Even from childhood, Peggy had a giving heart, a humble spirit, a gift for music, and an incredible work ethic.
She graduated from Logansport High School in 1951 and attended Purdue University until she married John Thomas Rinehart. She and John were married for 61 years until his passing in 2013. They started their family in Logansport, but as their four kids grew, they moved first to Springfield, Ohio, and later “back home again” to Kokomo, Indiana.
Through the years, Peggy held various jobs outside the home, including bank teller, secretary, teachers’ aide, and library aide. She and John enjoyed working together on projects large and small, including raising a garden, building a barn, writing a book, rehabbing a house, and countless others.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Mary Crimmins Powlen; husband, John Rinehart; brothers, Russel Powlen and Jim Powlen (Lois); son, Mark, (who is survived by his wife Christy); Peggy's beloved four-legged son, Skeezix.
She is survived by three of her four children, Brian Rinehart, Pam Sovik, and Kevin Rinehart ; a brother, Pat Powlen (Karen) and brother- and sister-in-law, Dick Rinehart (Polly); 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Peggy’s last 8 years would have been very different if not for the sacrifices of son Brian who moved from Atlanta, Georgia to live with her, and care for her, allowing her to spend her final years in her own home.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Kim Clear, a beloved niece/cousin, who served as both companion and caregiver for much of the last 5 years of Peg’s life.
