Gertrude L. Vangundy

Services for Gertrude L. Vangundy, 78, of Huntley, Illinois, formerly of Royal Center, Indiana and the Chicagoland area will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home, Royal Center Chapel.

She died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock, Illinois.

Born March 8, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Hildegard L. (Sidow) Oberle.  On July 2, 1948 she married Colonel D. Vangundy in Chicago, Illinois. He preceded her in death on April 19, 2000.

Gertrude was an incredible woman who always put her family first. She was a young mother of three small children when her parents died.  Rather than see her 6 younger siblings (ages 6-17) go to an orphanage, with the help of her older brother Gerhard, raised them along with her own?A�.as her own. This close-knit family honors her every Motherchr(39)s Day.

She was a homemaker and had formerly worked for the Law Offices of Keck, Mahin & Cate in Chicago for 12 years.  She enjoyed hooking rugs and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who loved spending time with her family.

She attended Trinity Lutheran Church of Huntley.

Surviving are 2 Daughters, Janet M. Crunelle (Mark) of Camarillo, California, and Judith L. Melman (Lawrence) of Huntley, Illinois, 2 Sons, Carl R. Vangundy (Sandy Johnson) of Elgin, Illinois and Richard P. Vangundy (Elizabeth) of Crete, Illinois, 3 Brothers, Gerhard Oberle (Anne) of Revere, Mass, Frank Oberle of Everett, Mass, and George Oberle (Barbara Stewart) of Bloomingdale, Illinois, 3 Sisters, Louise Read of Bloomingdale, Illinois, Hildegarde Druckamiller of Corsicana, Texas, and Geraldine Stangeby (Roy) of Penn Valley, California, 10 Grandchildren, Mark Melman (Alicia), Louise Johnson (Donovan), Rebecca Melman (fiancA�AC. John Lesniewski), Carli Melman, Tiffany and Chad Crunelle, Matt Vangundy, Katie Hemp (Bryan Edwards), Adam Hemp (fiancA�AC. Jill Sakalares), and Cody Hemp, 1 Great-Granddaughter, Sidney, and Christopher Shelton (treasured family friend).

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, George J. Vangundy and brother Rudy Oberle.

Pastor Thomas Dewlen will officiate at the services.  Burial will be in Victor Chapel Cemetery, Star City, Indiana.

Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Friday March 7, 2008 at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, Royal Center, Indiana, or one hour (10-11a.m.) prior to the service on Saturday.
